Step into The Future

Laser therapy for dogs and cats.

How Laser Therapy Works Sometimes, providing pets with the highest level of care requires thinking outside the box. Family Veterinary Care of Oakdale is proud to offer laser therapy, a non-invasive, painless, drug-free treatment modality proven to benefit a wide variety of pet health conditions.

Our top-of-the-line therapy laser works on the principle of photobiomodulation, the process by which light energy enters cells and alters function. Applying a specific wavelength and intensity of light to injured tissues can stimulate blood vessel growth, improve tissue oxygenation, speed healing, and reduce inflammation and pain.

Conditions that respond to laser therapy Our veterinarians may prescribe laser therapy for any condition associated with inflammation, pain, or delayed healing, including:
  • Surgical incisions
  • Wounds
  • Skin conditions
  • Arthritis
  • Spinal diseases
  • Nerve damage
  • Bone or joint injuries
What to expect from your pet’s laser therapy Numerous studies support laser therapy’s safety and efficacy in pets. Except for a slight warming sensation, side effects are rare when a trained professional administers the therapy in a veterinary setting. Our veterinarians most often prescribe laser therapy as an adjunct to other treatments, although they may use the treatment alone for some cases of pain or inflammation. Diagnosis and health history dictate the number of treatments we recommend and the length of each session. Typical treatments take between 10 and 20 minutes and are performed on an outpatient basis.

Would My Pet Benefit From Laser Therapy?

Laser treatments may sound like a far out technology, but light-based therapy’s many applications, which range from superficial (i.e., skin) to deep tissue and bone, have been used in human and equine medicine for many years. Family Veterinary Care of Oakdale is proud to offer this safe, non-invasive, low-stress therapy [...]

During a laser therapy session, you, your pet, and our team member operating the laser must wear protective goggles to prevent inadvertent laser beam damage. A session involves our specially trained team member moving the laser probe continuously across the treatment area while your pet relaxes comfortably. Treatments are repeated several times weekly at first, and then less frequently as your pet improves.
